This common chemical in toothpaste

A study has found that triclosan, a chemical widely used in toothpastes and other personal care products to kill bacteria, may put women at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis. Although the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of triclosan in hand sanitisers, the chemical is still used in other products, including soaps, toothpaste and mouthwash.

According to the FDA, triclosan has been linked to reduced levels of some thyroid hormones and an added risk of making some bacteria resistant to antibiotics, although of these links have been inconclusive.
